Following Jesus…
Scott Bane and I are talking about what it means to be a disciple and the art of disciple-making. Our conversation springs from our dissatisfaction with the general state of discipleship in our own lives and in what we can see in the Christian sub-culture.
So, we have started by beginning to list the traits of a disciple. We’ve got two so far and here they are:
A Disciple of Jesus:
1. Abandons all other pursuits to follow Jesus.
2. Listens to the Holy Spirit and obeys.
This is just our beginning, but I would be happy to hear what you think…
Disciple-making, at its core, is about leadership development. Every disciple Jesus chose became a leader and after 3 short years, he trusted them to lead a movement that would transform the world.
Every disciple Jesus chose also became a martyr. I wonder how that figures into the conversation…
I think Jesus was “developing” followers. Maybe his idea of followership is so radical that we need to redefine the word. Maybe we should develop more “martyrship” programs…:)
3. Is the servant of all
4. Freely gives.
5. Is a “fisher” of people.
6. Loves God with all of their heart, with all of their mind, with all of their soul and with all of their strength.
7. Has an unshakable confidence in God’s love for him
8. Lives a repentant life.
9. Lives a life of good deeds.
